The 4-H Pledge:I pledge: My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty, My Hands to larger service and My Health to better living, for my Club, my Community, my Country and my World. 4-H in Canada began in Roland, Manitoba in 1913 as a community-based organization dedicated to the growth and development of rural youth. Today's program continues to serve primarily rural communities but you don't have to live on a farm to join or live in the country. More and more urban children are discovering the amazing benefits of 4-H involvement. The Ontario 4-H program provides young people between the ages of 10 and 21 years of age with fun hands on training in different areas. This is a rural group that enhances the age group with new skills, self confidence and great opportunities, the young people get "hands-on-training" in different types of programs such as dairy cattle, showing of animals, farming machinery, and crop preparations just to name a few. ![]() We are part of the Durham East division and are looking forward to a rewarding and fun season. Stay tuned to see how this season unfolds. Pictures will be up and running soon. Our very first meeting was held Sunday April 25th. Our goal is to bring awareness to future farmers about the potential of owning an alpaca. Members where picked by lottery. Each member will have an animal assigned to them. Some of the kids may have to double up with an animal, but I am positive the alpacas will not mind. Participants will learn to handle and train their animals. They will also explore the history of these fine fleeced animals and how they arrived in North America. We will also learn the importance in shearing and preparing the fiber for processing and sale. These members will also study health requirements and procedures, pasture and barn maintenance and much more! Will we have enough time to do all this? Stay tuned for updates on our meetings and perhaps some pictures. If you can spare some alpaca time, why don't you start you own alpaca 4-H group in your area. Visit www.4-h-canada.ca to learn more detail or call me to discuss your 4-H potential. I would be happy to help you! If you have any additional questions feel free to contact me |
